Everyone should be able to arrive.
Accessibility is part of the north-star question we ask of everything: does this make the experience more human, or less human? This page states what we do, what we cannot yet do, and how to tell us what you need.
On this website
- ○Semantic headings, landmarks and lists so screen readers can navigate the structure.
- ○Descriptive alternative text on every photograph, written per language.
- ○All animation and reveal effects are disabled automatically when your system requests reduced motion.
- ○Keyboard operation throughout, with visible focus and no keyboard traps.
- ○Text contrast checked in both the light and the dark sections of the site.
- ○Text resizes without loss of content, and layouts reflow on small screens.
- ○Quiet Mode offers a deliberately minimal, low-stimulation interface.
At San Francesco, in Padula
- ○San Francesco is a historic building on a hillside. Parts of it are not step-free, and protected fabric limits what can be altered.
- ○Improving access is part of the preservation programme, not an afterthought to it.
- ○Tell us your access needs when you request a stay; every request is read by a person who will say honestly what is and is not currently possible.
- ○Dietary needs, mobility, hearing, vision, neurodivergence and travel companions are all part of that conversation.
Language access
- ○The site is published in English, Italian and Spanish. Where a human-reviewed translation does not yet exist, the English text is shown rather than an automatic translation.
- ○Spiritual, theological, historical and culturally sensitive material is never published in a new language without human review.
- ○Portuguese, French and German are planned; the architecture already supports them.
Known limitations
- ○This site is an early prototype and has not yet been audited against WCAG 2.2 AA by an independent party.
- ○Video and audio stories will ship with captions and transcripts; none are published yet.
- ○Some photographs currently shown are temporary images or freely licensed archive photographs, and will be replaced with documentary photography.
